<p>This tutorial will walk you through downloading, installing, and testing the <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/uCFPBJ">Arduino software</a> (also known as the <a href="http://ift.tt/25oS3pH" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="Arduino"><strong>Arduino</strong></a> IDE – short for Integrated Development Environment). Before you jump to the page for your operating system, make sure you’ve got all the right equipment.</p>
<p>What you will need:</p>

<p>This page will show you how to install and test the Arduino software with a Windows operating system (Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and XP).</p>
<h3>Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP</h3>
<ul>
<li>Go to the Arduino <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/uCFPBJ">download page</a> and download the latest version of the Arduino software for Windows.</li>
<li>When the download is finished, un-zip it and open up the Arduino folder to confirm that yes, there are indeed some files and sub-folders inside. The file structure is important so don’t be moving any files around unless you really know what you’re doing.</li>
<li>Power up your Arduino by connecting your Arduino board to your computer with a USB cable (or FTDI connector if you’re using an Arduino pro). You should see the an <a href="http://ift.tt/1Rq2vDU" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="LED"><strong>LED</strong></a> labed ‘ON’ light up. (<a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1SDznLS">this diagram</a> shows the placement of the power <a href="http://ift.tt/1LK8gQ0" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="LED"><strong>LED</strong></a> on the UNO).</li>
<li>If you’re running Windows 8, you’ll need to disable driver signing, so go see the Windows 8 section. If you’re running Windows 7, Vista, or XP, you’ll need to install some drivers, so head to the Windows 7, Vista, and XP section down below.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Windows 8</h3>
<p>Windows 8 comes with a nice little security ‘feature’ that ‘protects’ you from unsigned driver installation. Some older versions of Arduino Uno come with unsigned drivers, so in order to use your Uno, you’ll have to tell Windows to disable driver signing. This issue has been addressed in newer releases of the Arduino IDE, but if you run into issues, you can try this fix first.</p>
<p>For a nice, step-by-step tutorial with pictures <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1SDznLT">click here</a>, otherwise the steps are outlined below.</p>
<p>To <em>temporarily</em> disable driver signing:</p>
<ul>
<li>From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon)</li>
<li>Click ‘More PC Settings’</li>
<li>Click ‘General’</li>
<li>Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.</li>
<li>Wait a bit.</li>
<li>Click ‘Troubleshoot’.</li>
<li>Click ‘Advanced Options’</li>
<li>Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’</li>
<li>Click Restart.</li>
<li>When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list.</li>
</ul>
<p>To <em>permanently</em> disable driver signing (recommended, but has some minor security implications):</p>
<ul>
<li>Go to the metro start screen</li>
<li>Type in “cmd”</li>
<li>Right click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator” from the buttons on the bottom of your screen</li>
<li>Type/paste in the following commands: bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON</li>
<li>Reboot!</li>
</ul>
<h3>Windows 7, Vista, and XP</h3>
<p>Installing the Drivers for the Arduino Uno (from Arduino.cc)</p>
<ul>
<li>Plug in your board and wait for Windows to begin it’s driver installation process</li>
<li>After a few moments, the process will fail, despite its best efforts</li>
<li>Click on the Start Menu, and open up the Control Panel</li>
<li>While in the Control Panel, navigate to System and Security. Next, click on System</li>
<li>Once the System window is up, open the Device Manager</li>
<li>Look under Ports (COM & LPT). You should see an open port named “Arduino UNO (COMxx)”. If there is no COM & LPT section, look under ‘Other Devices’ for ‘Unknown Device’</li>
</ul>

<li>Right click on the “Arduino UNO (COMxx)” or “Unknown Device” port and choose the “Update Driver Software” option</li>
<li>Next, choose the “Browse my computer for Driver software” option</li>

<li>Finally, navigate to and select the Uno’s driver file, named “ArduinoUNO.inf”, located in the “Drivers” folder of the Arduino Software download (not the “FTDI USB Drivers” sub-directory). If you cannot see the .inf file, it is probably just hidden. You can select the ‘drivers’ folder with the ‘search sub-folders’ option selected instead.</li>
<li>Windows will finish up the driver installation from there</li>
</ul>

<h3>Launch and Blink!</h3>
<p>After following the appropriate steps for your software install, we are now ready to test your first program with your Arduino board!</p>

<li>If you disconnected your board, plug it back in</li>
<li>Open the Blink example sketch by going to: File > Examples > 1.Basics > Blink</li>

<p>This page will show you how to install and test the Arduino software on a Mac computer running <a href="http://ift.tt/1Rt4pHg" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="OSX"><strong>OSX</strong></a>.</p>

<li>Go to the <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/uDkzJa">FTDI website</a> and download the latest version of the drivers.</li>
<li>Once you’re done downloading, double click the package and follow the instructions from the installer.</li>
<li>Restart your computer after installing the drivers.</li>

<p>This page will show you how to install and test the Arduino software with a Windows operating system (Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and XP).</p>
<h3>Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP</h3>
<ul>
<li>Go to the Arduino <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/uCFPBJ">download page</a> and download the latest version of the Arduino software for Windows.</li>
<li>When the download is finished, un-zip it and open up the Arduino folder to confirm that yes, there are indeed some files and sub-folders inside. The file structure is important so don’t be moving any files around unless you really know what you’re doing.</li>
<li>Power up your Arduino by connecting your Arduino board to your computer with a USB cable (or FTDI connector if you’re using an Arduino pro). You should see the an <a href="http://ift.tt/1Rq2vDU" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="LED"><strong>LED</strong></a> labed ‘ON’ light up. (<a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1SDznLS">this diagram</a> shows the placement of the power <a href="http://ift.tt/1LK8gQ0" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="LED"><strong>LED</strong></a> on the UNO).</li>
<li>If you’re running Windows 8, you’ll need to disable driver signing, so go see the Windows 8 section. If you’re running Windows 7, Vista, or XP, you’ll need to install some drivers, so head to the Windows 7, Vista, and XP section down below.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Windows 8</h3>
<p>Windows 8 comes with a nice little security ‘feature’ that ‘protects’ you from unsigned driver installation. Some older versions of Arduino Uno come with unsigned drivers, so in order to use your Uno, you’ll have to tell Windows to disable driver signing. This issue has been addressed in newer releases of the Arduino IDE, but if you run into issues, you can try this fix first.</p>
<p>For a nice, step-by-step tutorial with pictures <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1SDznLT">click here</a>, otherwise the steps are outlined below.</p>
<p>To <em>temporarily</em> disable driver signing:</p>
<ul>
<li>From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon)</li>
<li>Click ‘More PC Settings’</li>
<li>Click ‘General’</li>
<li>Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.</li>
<li>Wait a bit.</li>
<li>Click ‘Troubleshoot’.</li>
<li>Click ‘Advanced Options’</li>
<li>Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’</li>
<li>Click Restart.</li>
<li>When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list.</li>
</ul>
<p>To <em>permanently</em> disable driver signing (recommended, but has some minor security implications):</p>
<ul>
<li>Go to the metro start screen</li>
<li>Type in “cmd”</li>
<li>Right click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator” from the buttons on the bottom of your screen</li>
<li>Type/paste in the following commands: bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON</li>
<li>Reboot!</li>
</ul>
<h3>Windows 7, Vista, and XP</h3>
<p>Installing the Drivers for the Arduino Uno (from Arduino.cc)</p>

<li>Plug in your board and wait for Windows to begin it’s driver installation process</li>
<li>After a few moments, the process will fail, despite its best efforts</li>
<li>Click on the Start Menu, and open up the Control Panel</li>
<li>While in the Control Panel, navigate to System and Security. Next, click on System</li>
<li>Once the System window is up, open the Device Manager</li>
<li>Look under Ports (COM & LPT). You should see an open port named “Arduino UNO (COMxx)”. If there is no COM & LPT section, look under ‘Other Devices’ for ‘Unknown Device’</li>
</ul>

But the hardware alone is only one side of the story: you still need to run an operating system. <p>Three different flavours of Linux are available officially: <strong>Pidora</strong> (based on Fedora);<strong>Archlinux </strong>(a DIY OS); and <strong>Raspian</strong> (Debian).</p>
<p>Raspian is the recommended OS for everyone new to the <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/Zv70Hw">Raspberry Pi</a>, but if you fancy trying out some of the others too, a new tool from the creators of <a href="http://ift.tt/1o7SsLh" target="_bank" itemprop="url" title="Raspberry"><strong>Raspberry</strong></a> Pi <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/16E2IS0">has been released</a> which allows you to choose from a selection of images during boot-up (including some of the others on this list).</p>

<h2>OpenElec & XBMC</h2>
<p>OpenElec is a <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/T0toXa">slimmed down and optimized</a> OS specifically made for running XBox Media Centre. Unlike Raspbmc, OpenElec doesn’t contain anything other than the bare minimum, so it’s more difficult to install other packages, for instance. Consequently, the selection of add-ons available is much smaller <em>(no emulators, gasp!)</em> – but it does offer better performance.</p>
<p>It’s my current choice of media center having functionally replaced my Windows 8 PC in the living room.</p>

<p>Considering how easy it is to swap out an SD card for making a Pi multipurpose, OpenElec is definitely a great way to enjoy the core XBMC experience. Download a<span class="removed_link" title="http://ift.tt/1Rt4pad">ready-made image here</span> which includes a good selection of streaming plugins like<em>IceFilms</em>, and some metadata pre-downloaded for the most popular shows. You can also speed up the system by <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1SDzkzN">running from a USB stick</a> after the initial SD boot.</p>

<h2>RetroPie</h2>
<p>RetroPie is a universal emulator, which means it can pretty much play any ROM you throw at it, although Playstation games don’t work so well (that is kind of pushing the Pi, don’t you think?). Technically built on Raspian, but this comes as a prebuilt OS image you can download.</p>

<h2>RISC OS</h2>
<p>A nice 1080p GUI awaits you in this retro environment specifically built for the ARM , by the team who designed the original ARM processor. Though it might seem unfamiliar to you, RISC was actually commonplace in British schools in the early 90s.</p>

<p>Some basic apps are included, but for a small fee you can even upgrade to a full Office suite.</p>
<h2>Firefox OS</h2>
<p>Not quite the sleek new phone UI you’ve been seeing, but a combination of Firefox and PTXdist-built <a target="_blank" class="vglnk" title="Link added by VigLink" href="http://ift.tt/22TzN5E" rel="nofollow">Linux</a>. It’s very much a <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/1Rt4rz8">work in progress</a>, and doesn’t actually support any input devices yet – so purely used as a public information terminal. <h2>Plan 9</h2>
<p>Do you like being tortured? Then you’ll love Plan 9 from Bell Labs, a barebones open-source unix-like OS with primitive GUI that fully supports UTF8 filenames (I know, exciting stuff). It was designed by the same people who created the original UNIX, so that must mean it’s good. <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/11oc1U9">Download an SD image here</a>, and strap yourself in for literally minutes of hardcore <em>fun</em> (and don’t forget <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/RfGn63">this newbie guide</a>).</p>

<p>Why would you actually want to run Plan 9? I’m sorry, I don’t have a clue.</p>
<h2>Android</h2>
<p>Broadcom was working on an official build of Android 4.0 which would be video accelerated, but work on the project has seemingly died with <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/OAeGSz">no news in a year</a> .</p>

<p>You can however download an <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/QFkTMl">older Android 2.3 build</a> which, while technically accomplished, is also too slow to be useable.</p>
<h2>Bonus: Pipboy</h2>
<p>Wearable computing is all the rage, and I know the first thing I’ll be doing to prepare for the coming apocalypse is making a functional Pipboy, which is precisely what <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/RfGn64">this ingenious cosplayer managed</a>.</p>

<p>Ok, it’s not actually an operating system as such, but it is a bit of <a target="_blank" class="vglnk" title="Link added by VigLink" href="http://ift.tt/1mcXvsY" rel="nofollow">Python</a> code that makes it look like you have a Pipboy. Which is pretty awesome, really.</p>

<p>For the truly ambitious, this 42-Pi 3D scanner can capture a complete 360 degree image of any object up to and including a human-sized one. <p>Spring is gradually approaching, which can only mean one thing: the Nigel Kennedy of nature, Chris Packham, is about to return to evening TV with camera traps and other cool tricks.</p>
<p>If you fancy yourself as a punk- rock preservationist, you’ll want to get your paws on one of these Raspberry Pi-powered cameras, designed for capturing animals of all sizes. You can buy it with or without a Raspberry Pi board and the case also holds a Pi cam, SD card and rechargeable battery (all included).</p>
<p>Just power it up and plonk it on a birdfeeder, by a badger sett or at the zoo and it’s ready to go. Because it’s based on the standard Pi operating system, adding extra features later on (such as video capture) should be easy.</p>

<p>If you like the sound of a homebrewed voice controller for the likes of Spotify or XBMC, it’s time you met Jasper…</p>
<p><strong>1</strong>. Gather your kit: you’ll need a Raspberry Pi (model B or higher), a 4GB SD card, a microphone and a speaker.</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> Head to the ‘installation’ bit of <a target="_blank" href="http://ift.tt/OrVl7X">jasperproject.github.io</a> and download the disk image. Now go to your Pi’s home directory, clone the Jasper source code and install the Python libraries.</p>
<p><strong>3</strong>. Finally, create a user profile, choose a speech-to-text (STT) engine (Jasper supports several), and follow the instructions to install support for services like Spotify that you want to voice-control.</p>

<p>The Raspbery Pi was expected to sell about 10,000 units when it went on sale two years ago. Four million boards later, it’s still the tinkerer’s choice for most projects. Imagination Technologies’ new Creator CI20 is faster, adds a second ARM core to the CPU and has features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and an IR blaster built-in, along with storage and a pre-installed operating system, which can be proper, full-strength Android KitKat or desktop Linux… but it also costs twice as much.</p>
