Windows

This page will show you how to install and test the Arduino software with a Windows operating system (Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and XP).

Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP

Go to the Arduino download page and download the latest version of the Arduino software for Windows.

When the download is finished, un-zip it and open up the Arduino folder to confirm that yes, there are indeed some files and sub-folders inside. The file structure is important so don’t be moving any files around unless you really know what you’re doing.

Power up your Arduino by connecting your Arduino board to your computer with a USB cable (or FTDI connector if you’re using an Arduino pro). You should see the an LED labed ‘ON’ light up. (this diagram shows the placement of the power LED on the UNO).

If you’re running Windows 8, you’ll need to disable driver signing, so go see the Windows 8 section. If you’re running Windows 7, Vista, or XP, you’ll need to install some drivers, so head to the Windows 7, Vista, and XP section down below.

Windows 8

Windows 8 comes with a nice little security ‘feature’ that ‘protects’ you from unsigned driver installation. Some older versions of Arduino Uno come with unsigned drivers, so in order to use your Uno, you’ll have to tell Windows to disable driver signing. This issue has been addressed in newer releases of the Arduino IDE, but if you run into issues, you can try this fix first.

For a nice, step-by-step tutorial with pictures click here, otherwise the steps are outlined below.

To temporarily disable driver signing:

From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon)

Click ‘More PC Settings’

Click ‘General’

Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.

Wait a bit.

Click ‘Troubleshoot’.

Click ‘Advanced Options’

Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’

Click Restart.

When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list.

To permanently disable driver signing (recommended, but has some minor security implications):

Go to the metro start screen

Type in “cmd”

Right click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator” from the buttons on the bottom of your screen

Type/paste in the following commands: bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON

Reboot!

Windows 7, Vista, and XP

Installing the Drivers for the Arduino Uno (from Arduino.cc)

Plug in your board and wait for Windows to begin it’s driver installation process

After a few moments, the process will fail, despite its best efforts

Click on the Start Menu, and open up the Control Panel

While in the Control Panel, navigate to System and Security. Next, click on System

Once the System window is up, open the Device Manager

Look under Ports (COM & LPT). You should see an open port named “Arduino UNO (COMxx)”. If there is no COM & LPT section, look under ‘Other Devices’ for ‘Unknown Device’

Right click on the “Arduino UNO (COMxx)” or “Unknown Device” port and choose the “Update Driver Software” option

Next, choose the “Browse my computer for Driver software” option

Finally, navigate to and select the Uno’s driver file, named “ArduinoUNO.inf”, located in the “Drivers” folder of the Arduino Software download (not the “FTDI USB Drivers” sub-directory). If you cannot see the .inf file, it is probably just hidden. You can select the ‘drivers’ folder with the ‘search sub-folders’ option selected instead.

Windows will finish up the driver installation from there

For earlier versions of the Arduino boards (e.g.Arduino Duemilanove, Nano, or Diecimila) check out this page for specific directions.

Who can argue with a $40 computer? Especially one that also forms a good base for electronics projects! I certainly can’t. But the hardware alone is only one side of the story: you still need to run an operating system. Join me today as I explore 7 different OSes you can install on your Raspberry Pi, right now. Disclaimer: some are significantly more useful than others.

Linux

Three different flavours of Linux are available officially: Pidora (based on Fedora);Archlinux (a DIY OS); and Raspian (Debian).

Raspian is the recommended OS for everyone new to the Raspberry Pi, but if you fancy trying out some of the others too, a new tool from the creators of Raspberry Pi has been released which allows you to choose from a selection of images during boot-up (including some of the others on this list).

OpenElec & XBMC

OpenElec is a slimmed down and optimized OS specifically made for running XBox Media Centre. Unlike Raspbmc, OpenElec doesn’t contain anything other than the bare minimum, so it’s more difficult to install other packages, for instance. Consequently, the selection of add-ons available is much smaller (no emulators, gasp!) – but it does offer better performance.

It’s my current choice of media center having functionally replaced my Windows 8 PC in the living room.

Considering how easy it is to swap out an SD card for making a Pi multipurpose, OpenElec is definitely a great way to enjoy the core XBMC experience. Download aready-made image here which includes a good selection of streaming plugins likeIceFilms, and some metadata pre-downloaded for the most popular shows. You can also speed up the system by running from a USB stick after the initial SD boot.

We also a have a nice tutorial here on the hardware you’ll need for your own Pi Media Center.

RetroPie

RetroPie is a universal emulator, which means it can pretty much play any ROM you throw at it, although Playstation games don’t work so well (that is kind of pushing the Pi, don’t you think?). Technically built on Raspian, but this comes as a prebuilt OS image you can download.

Christian has written a full guide to getting RetroPi up and running, so head over there for emulation heaven.

RISC OS

A nice 1080p GUI awaits you in this retro environment specifically built for the ARM , by the team who designed the original ARM processor. Though it might seem unfamiliar to you, RISC was actually commonplace in British schools in the early 90s.

Here’s a good intro to RISC, and here’s a list of recommended software.

Head to this page for full install instructions for your OS and to download the SD image, or download the NOOBS tool mentioned above which includes RISC.

Some basic apps are included, but for a small fee you can even upgrade to a full Office suite.

Firefox OS

Not quite the sleek new phone UI you’ve been seeing, but a combination of Firefox and PTXdist-built Linux. It’s very much a work in progress, and doesn’t actually support any input devices yet – so purely used as a public information terminal. Check out this page for a ready made image if you dare.

Plan 9

Do you like being tortured? Then you’ll love Plan 9 from Bell Labs, a barebones open-source unix-like OS with primitive GUI that fully supports UTF8 filenames (I know, exciting stuff). It was designed by the same people who created the original UNIX, so that must mean it’s good. Download an SD image here, and strap yourself in for literally minutes of hardcore fun (and don’t forget this newbie guide).

Why would you actually want to run Plan 9? I’m sorry, I don’t have a clue.

Android

Broadcom was working on an official build of Android 4.0 which would be video accelerated, but work on the project has seemingly died with no news in a year .

You can however download an older Android 2.3 build which, while technically accomplished, is also too slow to be useable.

Bonus: Pipboy

Wearable computing is all the rage, and I know the first thing I’ll be doing to prepare for the coming apocalypse is making a functional Pipboy, which is precisely what this ingenious cosplayer managed.

Ok, it’s not actually an operating system as such, but it is a bit of Python code that makes it look like you have a Pipboy. Which is pretty awesome, really.

Raspberry Pi, the bargain micro PC released earlier this year, has fertilised the imaginations of the public, bringing with it a boom in inventive approaches to computing not seen since the good old days of 8-bit.

Indeed, a veritable golden age of computers is once again upon us, so with that in mind here are our top 25 fun things you can do with your Raspberry Pi. If you’re new to Pi, check out our guide for getting started with your new piece of kit first, but bookmark this page and come back.

Editor’s note, 28 July 2014: This guide was written back in 2012 with the original Pi in mind, not the new, sleeker Model B+, but all of these tips are still relevant, with minimal tweaking.

1. Mod My Pi

Mod My Pi do a great range of colourful cases, using state of the art injection moulding techniques, and they’re not a bad price either.

2. Make your own Pi case

Fancy making your own case? Then this printable PDF will do the trick nicely. It’s a template to cut out and glue to together (very Blue Peter), which will form a case for the RPi.

3. Living room PC

Now your Pi is in a cool looking case, hook it up to your TV and enjoy a mini-media experience with OpenELEC. Follow the instructions, and you’ll be up and running in no time.

4. A mini Web browser

Since your Raspberry Pi is already hooked up to your TV, why not enjoy some big screen surfing? You’ll need a better browser than Midori for this though, so try Chromium. Just drop into a Terminal and type: ‘sudo apt- get install chromium-browser’, then hit Enter.

5. ZX Spectrum Pi

That lovable rubber keyboarded gem has made a grand entrance once again, this time with Raspberry insides. Getting the hardware to work is one thing, but to emulate this wonderful 8-bit beauty, type the following into the Terminal: ‘sudo apt-get install fuse-emulator-common’, and press Enter. Type ‘y’ to confirm the download and install.

Once Fuse has been installed, and you are returned to the prompt, type: ‘sudo apt-get install spectrum-roms fuse-emulator-utils’, and press Enter. When, once again, you return to the prompt, type in: ‘sudo amixer cset numid=3 2’, and press Enter.

6. Retro Pi

If the Spectrum whetted your appetite, then check out the RetroPie Project. With this you can emulate a wealth of old consoles: SNES, Mega Drive etc. The setup takes its toll on the old RPi and it’s not the quickest install ever, but it’s certainly worth it in the end. Follow these instructions and get gaming.

It’s important to remember that Nintendo takes an extremely dim view of you downloading even very old games that you own. But there are free classic games available legally online, with the permission of their creators, such as these.

7. Arcade Pi

In fact, why not go one step further and create a full sized arcade cabinet? You could follow the instructions in this blog post from RPi user, Darren. Or, hunt around on eBay for an old arcade cabinet to tinker with.

8. Windows 3.0 on a Pi

While we’re on the subject of going retro, have a go at running DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.0 via QEMU. First, pay a visit to Kirsle and extract the VirtualBox (VDI) image, and using VirtualBox convert the VDI to a raw IMG by typing: ‘vboxmanage clonehd “image.vdi” “image.img” –format RAW’ (replacing ‘image’ with the name of your image).

Next install QEMU by typing: ‘sudo apt-get install qemu’. Then convert the raw image to a QEMU qcow image by typing: ‘qemu- img convert -f raw image.img -O qcow2 image.qcow’. Finally run the image by typing: ‘qemu image.qcow’. It’s far from perfect, and has a tendency to freeze, but it’s still fun.

9. Robotics

Robots are generally quite cool — obviously aside from the ones that wish to except for the ones that try to kill all of humanity. There are plenty of friendly robots out there. Online magazine RPi MagPi has a feature (from page 9 onwards) about how to make a robotic arm work with the RPi.

10. Robotics 2

While we’re on the subject of robots, MagPi also has a great project involving Big Track and the RPi.

11. Learn to program
The RPi makes for a great programming platform, with a huge choice of languages available. Check some of them out on the eLinux wiki.

12. Scratch the Pi

Scratch is a programming language that’s easy to get to grips with and easy to use, which makes it good for children to start learning with and for creating rich programming projects. Check out this tutorial, featuring a bonus cat.

13. Spectrum BASIC for RPi

Although you can play Spectrum games via the emulator, programming BASIC through the emulator just isn’t the same. That being the case, use SpecBAS instead, which is a remake of Sinclair BASIC that’s available with full instructions.

14. Pi Hacker

Being as small as it is, the RPi would make an excellent hacking tool. Regardless of the ethics involved, try out this security penetration testing project.

15. Firefox OS on Pi

Although still in the developmental stages, Oleg Romashin an engineer at Nokia, has managed to get Firefox OS running on the Raspberry Pi. FFOS isn’t out officially, but check out what’s been achieved so far.

16. RISC OS for Pi

If you fancy a blast from the past, then give RISC OS for the RPi a try. Downloads and full instructions are available.

17. Beer can keyboard

A keyboard made from beer cans? True enough, the Robofun team hooked up an Arduino board to a Raspberry Pi along with many cans of beer. Have a look at their video below.

18. BitTorrent Server

If you frequent the various Torrent sites, then why not create a dedicated lean Torrent machine? Just hook it up to your router and leave it to do its business. Full instructions, scripts and downloads come courtesy of the snapdragon:IT blog.

19. RPi cloud server

Fancy building your very own cloud server? By using OwnCloud you can. Follow the instructions, and the customised script from petRockBlog and you’ll become your own cloud provider in no time.

20. RPi UAV

The concept is brilliant, an RPi UAV (or flying drone to the likes of you and I) — just think of the possibilities! Be inspired by Maggie — possibly the first Raspberry Pi-powered quadcopter in the world.

21. RPi Weather Station

This DragonTail mapping tutorial would make an excellent science project for school, the Raspberry Pi weather station. Using a Maplin bought USB Wireless Touch Weather Station, the RPi can log all relevant data.

22. 10-inch RPi Touchscreen

Using a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen and a HDMI-LVDS converter you can create a touchscreen Raspberry Pi. The full kit can be purchased from Chalkboard Electronics and then constructed using the instructions in the YouTube video below.

23. Home automation
There’s a new product called PiFace that’s perfect for home automation. It hooks up to the RPi and allows it to detect switch states from a door sensor, a pressure pad or any number of other switch types.

24. Minecraft

The indescribably popular game Minecraft is available for the Raspberry Pi, allowing you to get all your block-bashing kicks in miniature. Best of all, it’s free to download, with full instructions here.

25. Raspberry Pi Cluster

Many Pi’s make light work. Check out these instructions from the University of Southampton to make a RPi Supercomputer.

9) The BeetBox

The wackiest project on the list is the BeetBox. Created by artist Scott Garner, it’s an interactive drum kit made of vegetables. You tap the beets to create a beat, just like a real drum kit.

The secret sauce is a capacitive touch sensor that connects to a Raspberry Pi, which sends signals to an amp inside a handmade wooden case. Surreal? Yes. Functional? Yes. Fun? Hell yes.

10) The PiPhone

Forget the Batphone, it’s all about the PiPhone. Stuart Johnson took the classic red GPO 746 rotary-dial phone, gutted out the old circuit board, and replaced it with a Raspberry Pi.

With a little elbow grease in C# he synced the Pi to the phone’s dial-pulse system, turning it into a functioning internet phone. At the last update, he had applied to Microsoft to make calls over Skype.

11) Pi in the Sky

Vying with BeetBox for the coolest name, is the Pi in the Sky. Balloon enthusiast Dave Ackerman sent his Raspberry Pi into space using a weather balloon.

13) Live Calendar

Instructables user Piney filled the empty space on his wall with a Google Calendar.

Using a spare PC monitor and his Raspberry Pi, Piney set up the OS to always open Google Calendar over his home Wi-Fi with some clever scripting. One wall mount later, he had a live digital calendar on his wall.

14) The Raspberry Pi Tablet

Maker Faire contestant Michael Castor used a Raspberry Pi to make his own tablet.

The wooden frame was designed using AutoCAD. Castor then fit a power supply, Raspberry Pi, and 10in touch-sensitive display inside the frame.

The results are impressive. The PiPad is a full-size tablet running Raspbian Linux with XBMC.

15) PiRate Radio

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2979805726071943" data-ad-slot="7471922310" data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Turns out the Raspberry Pi can do more that just computing. It can send out signals over FM airwaves. It’s perfect for users who’ve dreamt about starting their own pirate radio station.

Some basic tools like a soldering iron, wire cutters, and an FM radio can come together to make a local FM radio transmitter. The video claims it can cover an entire football stadium.

16) Home-made media centre

The Raspberry Pi runs Raspbian Linux, a variant of Debian. Linux runs XBMC, the free media center program. Put those together and you’ve got a home-made media centre.

XBMC has a rich plugin library allowing you to use your Pi to watch content from sources like Hulu, The Daily Show, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

17) Jack the Ripper Bot

Not to be confused with the notorious serial-killer from London, the Ripper Bot is simply a DVD changer. One Raspberry Pi fan was tired of manually changing out discs while ripping DVDs to store content digitally.

The machine uses 3D-printed parts to pull CDs out of the player, drop them off to the side, and then load in a new one. Of course, it’s powered by a Raspberry Pi.

18) This is the Droid you’re looking for

A Raspberry Pi owner known as Greensheller went all out for Valentine’s Day last year and built a functioning R2-D2 for his girlfriend.

The little droid is brought to life by the Pi and can recognise and track faces, motion and distance. You can even give it commands in English and Chinese.

The creator’s girlfriend loved it, calling it “the best gift she’s ever received.” Alas, instructions aren’t available at this time, so you’ll have to use the force to help you construct this one.

19) Create a talking toy phone

Finally, a blogger by the name of Grant Gibson used a Raspberry Pi to create a talking telephone toy.

The project uses a Fisher Price Talking Telephone that features in Toy Story 3. Gibson used one he bought for his infant son.

A Raspberry Pi Model B+ gives the phone more brains than it was built with. A tiny WiFi dongle provides wireless network access, and a custom Python script (code below) running on startup provides all of the logic.

20) Track your cat with a Raspberry Pi

A mobile connected moggy you can monitor

Jeremy Wall has shown how you never have to put up posters looking for a missing cat with this handy pussy monitoring device.

IoT Kitteh uses a Raspberry Pi, mobile and GPS technology to communicate with the cloud and back to a user.

Raspberry Pi has floored the tech community yet again, with the launch of the Raspberry Pi Zero.

The newest member of the Pi family, the Zero costs £4 and measures just 65mm across while still remaining just as capable as earlier models.

With similar specs to the Raspberry Pi B+, the latest iteration of the hobby computing line will allow users to make their microcomputing projects even more micro without sacrificing performance.

It’s not just experienced hobbyists and hackers who have made excellent use of the Pi. Schoolchildren have come up with ingenious ideas, the best of which have been showcased at PA Consulting’s annual Raspberry Pi Awards.

We’ve rounded up all the best things you can do with a Raspberry Pi to give budding makers some ideas. Most of these are designed with the larger old-school models in mind, but many of them can be adapted (or even improved) to feature the Raspberry Pi Zero.

Below we take a look at 20 of our favourite Raspberry Pi projects to date:

1) Xbox Zero

The Raspberry Pi Zero is so small that it could fit into just about anything, as this hack demonstrates. Programmer and maker Terence Eden was lucky enough to get his hands on one of the devices, and with a bit of tinkering, was able to put it inside an original Xbox controller.

Using the RetroPie emulation software, he was able to make a retro games console that’s entirely contained in the controller. The controller itself loops back into the Pi, so all you need to play your favourite old-school games is an HDMI display and a power source. There’s even enough space to fit in a portable power pack for those that want to take it out and about.

Terence’s blog post with a full how-to is available here.

2) Tea-Pi

A quarter-finalist in the 2014 Hackaday Prize, this project by James Pavur is designed to automate the process of making a nice loose-leaf cuppa.

Once the tea leaves have been in for the desired time, it’ll lift them out again, ready to be made into a lovely cup of tea.

3) Raspberry Tor Router

Anonymising network Tor is beloved of privacy advocates everywhere, as well as Dark Web users with more nefarious purposes in mind.

This project turns the Raspberry Pi into a router to send all your network traffic through Tor, rather than just browser sessions. Best of all, you can even slap a battery pack into it to take it wherever you go!

4) Pi Multi-Room Music Player

Buying a bespoke multi-room sound system can be costly – but thanks to Jezsinglespeed at Instructables, you can now do it yourself for under £100. It’s a simple four-step project, which is perfect if you want to introduce children the power of the Raspberry Pi.

All you need is one wireless streamer, wireless receivers (no. depends on how many rooms) and of course your trusty Pi.

The Pi Musicbox software is used to make the magic happen and the results are just as good as any off the shelf product.

5) Get Whatsapp on your Raspberry Pi

Whatsapp has become one of the most popular cross-platform messaging service with over 600 million users. Now you can send messages directly from the Pi thanks to a tutorial from emmeshop.

All you need to do is to install the latest version of Raspbian, enter a few lines of code and confirm registration using your mobile.

6) Customised picture frame

Digital picture frames are becoming increasingly common but there are ways you can customise them. If you’ve got a spare monitor or an existing digital picture frame with a USB connection, the chances are you can connect your Raspberry Pi to it with a USB-HDMI adaptor.

Cameron Wiebe has come up with some scripts which allow the Pi to automatically download pictures from Deviant Art everyday and display them in a slideshow.

7) Treasure Box

Another superb project to work on with kids is the Treasure Box which, can be opened with facial recognition.

Tony Dicola has created comprehensive instructions to bring this to life. You’ll need to invest in a Raspberry Pi camera, servos and also box.

We all love our animals, but sometimes an automated pet feeder sounds like a pretty nifty thing to have around the house.

8) Power Cat Feeder

We all love our animals, but sometimes an automated pet feeder sounds like a pretty nifty thing to have around the house.

That’s what David Bryan did when he found himself going out of town without a cat-sitter, contemplating just leaving a big bowl of food out.

With his Power Cat Feeder project, however, he could make sure they didn’t overeat before going hungry. Presumably, too, it can be used to feed any animal – including humans.

Tell the Raspberry Pi for how long and at what temperature you want your tea brewed, and the Pi will activate the connected kettle, measure the temperature, and lower the tea in with a servo motor. 8) Power Cat Feeder
