“Do you know, I don’t think I’ve been here since I was an undergraduate. Back then I was here every week.”
“Supervisions?”
“No. This is where the Star Trek society met.”
My mother despaired of me: a 21-year-old woman who had a giant crush on a yellow android, went around in public with a communicator keyring that went “<a href="http://ift.tt/230VD7v" target="_blank">burbleburble</a>” and wore a Bajoran earring. (Everything turned out OK in the end.)

This is the first finished, publicly available LCARS interface we’ve seen for the Pi (and it works with a touchscreen as well); <a href="https://tobykurien.com/" target="_blank">Toby Kurien</a> has made this adaptable for any project you’re running on your <a href="http://ift.tt/1o7SsLh" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="Raspberry">Raspberry</a> Pi, so you can substitute your own retro-future display for whatever dull desktop you’ve been using up until now. Everything you need is on <a href="http://ift.tt/1VUP41O" target="_blank">Toby’s GitHub</a>. Toby’s using one of our <a href="http://ift.tt/1XVdJpS" target="_blank">official displays</a>here, and the finished product looks (and sounds) great.

After a quick search on Amazon, I ordered the <a href="http://ift.tt/1xi6VZn" target="_blank">CanaKit Raspberry Pi B+ Ultimate Starter Kit</a>.

The kit arrived the Friday before Thanksgiving, and I wasted no time getting to work. I didn’t need another computer running Linux at home, so my interest in the Raspberry Pi focused on what its hardware could offer that my laptops couldn’t.
When I unboxed the kit and saw all the LEDs and wires that came with it, the first thing that came to mind was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4PaB4TenH4" target="_blank">Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights</a> at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I had no idea if I’d be able to get the Pi to light up any of those LEDs, but if I could just understand how to make software interact with hardware at this level, my investment would be worth it.
First, being completely biased to anything Fedora or Red Hat-based, I decided to use <a href="http://ift.tt/1lt8AEs" target="_blank">NOOBS</a> to install <a href="http://pidora.ca/" target="_blank">Pidora</a>. But as cool as the Fedora spinoff was, I quickly realized it wasn’t the Linux distribution I needed to make my Christmas light show.
I went with the Raspberry Pi’s recommendation and installed <a href="http://ift.tt/LuPBCJ" target="_blank">Raspbian</a>. It quickly proved itself to be the better distribution for the job for a few reasons:
<ol>
<li><a href="http://ift.tt/Y8dZj8" target="_blank">raspi_config</a> allowed me to do quite a bit of configuration changes to the Raspberry Pi right off the bat.</li>
<li>Raspbian’s out-of-the-box needed about 50 percent less memory than Pidora, which is HUGE for a little piece of hardware that has 512 MB!</li>
<li>It came with <a href="http://ift.tt/I7KnSJ" target="_blank">Mathematica</a>, <a href="http://ift.tt/1ywq4og" target="_blank">Scratch</a>, <a href="http://sonic-pi.net/" target="_blank">Sonic Pi</a>, and the <a href="http://ift.tt/1LK8jLD" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="Python">Python</a> libraries I needed to do some coding with the GPIO pins.</li>
<li>The Raspberry Pi <a href="http://ift.tt/1UNGsgm" target="_blank">book</a> (and foundation) recommend <a href="http://ift.tt/1LIxY7j" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="Raspbian">Raspbian</a>, so I had two places to look for guidance and examples.</li>

By Friday night, I had the Pi connected to my TV and Wi-Fi. With Raspbian installed, I ran an: <code class="text geshifilter-text">apt-get update &amp;&amp; apt-get upgrade</code> to update the OS and was ready to dive in to all the extras that came with the kit.
I had learned a little about electricity in high school and college, but never really had a chance to apply that knowledge anywhere else. Terms like “breadboard,” “jumper wires,” “resistors,” “current,” and “voltage” weren’t foreign to me, but I had very little hands-on experience with them. So, what did I do? Googled them!
First, I used <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9jcHB9tWko" target="_blank">this video</a> to learn about the breadboard, LEDs, and resistors. I then applied that concept to the CanaKit. Here’s a video with a quick video I made of how I put it all together:

Now that I had the lights working, the next step was making the LEDs “listen to music” and blink accordingly?
With another Google search and I found an awesome open source project called: <a href="http://ift.tt/1eoLV64" target="_blank">LightshowPi</a>. I quickly realized that the idea of an Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights of my own wasn’t such a silly idea after all. After joining the LightshowPi <a href="http://ift.tt/1bBbhRy" target="_blank">Google+ Community</a>, I read up on a few tips and tricks for setting up my very own light show.

I went ahead and ordered the next part of the puzzle: a <a href="http://ift.tt/1uZqT4a" target="_blank">Sainsmart eight-channel 5V solid state relay (SSR) module board</a>. It took a couple of weeks to arrive at my doorstep, but when it did I went to the store right away to buy the rest of the materials I needed for my light show.

Once I tested the connection with the board, it was time for me hook up the Christmas lights I was going to put on my Christmas tree. The final result was simply one of the most satisfyingly geeky things I have ever done. For most of December, I left my Raspberry Pi connected to my Christmas tree. With a simple SSH client on my phone, I could easily start/stop the show any time I wanted.

Below is a comprehensive set of steps you can take to make your own:
<ol>
<li>Watch the breadboard <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9jcHB9tWko" target="_blank">tutorial</a>.</li>
<li>Watch my canakit <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzzdyzDdMKU" target="_blank">tutorial</a>.</li>
<li>Once you are comfortable with that, look at the <a href="http://ift.tt/1eoLV64" target="_blank">LightshowPi</a> project. Learn how to use it. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzF9u41EgCU" target="_blank">Here’s an example</a> of the LEDs being controlled by LightshowPi.</li>
<li>Join LightshowPi’s <a href="http://ift.tt/1bBbhRy" target="_blank">Google+ community</a>, read up the projects and photos there.</li>
<li>Once you’ve done all that and understand what’s going, order the <a href="http://ift.tt/1uZqT4a" target="_blank">Sainsmart eight-channel 5V solid state relay module board</a>. (mine took two weeks to arrive)</li>
<li>Watch <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2B67hybdAA" target="_blank">this video</a> on how to connect your Raspberry Pi to the SSR board.</li>
<li>Purchase six polarized extension cords at Target: five for the light string and one for the power source. I only used five of the eight channels on the SSR board.</li>
<li>Following this <a href="http://ift.tt/1Rq2u2V" target="_blank">step-by-step guide</a>, cut the wires and daisy chain the power source into the relay, and that’s it!</li>
</ol>
Note: Make sure you have something to cut the wires with, a small screwdriver to tighten the SSR board slots, electrical tape, and a jackknife.

Before creating the light show, I encouraged the reader to learn about breadboards and the <a href="http://www.canakit.com/" target="_blank">CanaKit</a> as a way to do some prototyping controls with the Raspberry Pi and LEDs.

I will be the first one to admit that plugging in all the wires, resistors, and LEDs that come with the kit can be a bit intimidating and potentially harmful to your hardware if you set it up improperly.
In an effort to simplify your exposure to the Raspberry Pi, LEDs, and writing the code that controls them, I decided to write about a little gizmo called the <a href="http://ift.tt/1UNGqoy" target="_blank">Pi Traffic Light</a>. It has just about everything you need to start controlling LEDs with your Pi.

With the Pi Traffic Light, all you need to do is plug in the little device directly into the GPIO pins on your Raspberry Pi. You don’t need to worry about connecting wires properly on a breadboard, finding the right resistor for your <a href="http://ift.tt/1LK8gQ0" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="LED">LED</a>, or figuring out which wire goes in the negative or positive end of your breadboard.
By default, the Pi Traffic Light is labeled to be plugged into GPIO pins 10, 9, 11, and ground (GND), which are set next to each other on the Pi. In the later versions of the Raspberry Pi, these pins are in the middle of the GPIO area and can be a little tricky to count to (especially if you have poor eyesight or lighting). I prefer to plug in my Pi Traffic Light device on GPIO pins 13, 19, 26, and GND because they are much easier to spot on the board.

Once you are plugged in, start your Raspberry Pi and write up some code to control the LEDs. For this article, I wrote a couple of examples. In the first one, I used Python to read the CPU utilization level of my Raspberry Pi using the psutil library and control the red, yellow, green light with the <a href="http://ift.tt/1UNGpkv" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="RPi.GPIO">RPi.GPIO</a> library.
If the CPU load is under 50%, show green. If CPU load is between 50% and 90%, show yellow. If the CPU load is over 90%, then red. There is also an exception handler, so when someone hits Ctrl+C to quit the program, all lights are turned off. For all intents and purposes, this code makes your Pi Traffic Light into a CPU utilization dashboard for your Raspberry Pi.

The second example is much simpler—but in a way, a bit more interesting—because I used Scratch to control the <a href="http://ift.tt/1Rq2vDU" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="LED">LED</a>. <a href="http://ift.tt/1wBxFju" target="_blank">Scratch</a> is a free visual programming language that allows the programmer to create interactive games, stories, and animations. It was originally developed at MIT and has had great success around the world as a way to introduce kids to concepts of programming.

The first thing you have to do to allow Scratch to interact with the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pin is open up the program, go to Edit, and select Start GPIO server. Then you can use the broadcast blocks to identify which GPIO pin you want to use. In the screenshot above, the two broadcast blocks refer to config19out and gpio19on. And guess what? GPIO 19 maps to the red LED.

In closing, if you are intimidated by the electronics, I hope this quick introduction to the Pi Traffic Light will help you become more curious and interested in what the Raspberry Pi has to offer. And if you or someone you know is trying to learn how to code, my hope is that using Scratch will keep things fun and interesting as you control LEDs with it.

In some cases, you may be inconvenient to use the image supplied by us, then you can install the LCD driver on an original system.
Configure your Pi:

<h2>Toggle between LCD and HDMI display</h2>
<h3>LCD display switch to HDMI display</h3>
The default boot mode of the system image in CD selects LCD display. And there will be no output to the external HDMI displayer if you apply one under this mode. In case that you want to use HDMI display, please execute the following commands:

HDMI-SYS-SHOW
</pre>
The system will load the driver (wait several minutes). And the <a href="http://ift.tt/1o7Ssv1" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="Raspberry Pi">Raspberry Pi</a> will reboot automatically, when the driver loaded. After the module rebooted, waiting more than 30 seconds, there will be information display on the HDMI screen. And then, you will enter into Startx interface.
<h3>HDMI display switch to LCD display</h3>
If you need to use LCD display again, please operate the following commands to switch to this mode:

When finished the commands above, the system will load the driver (wait several minutes). And the <a href="http://ift.tt/1UIqQdK" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="Raspberry">Raspberry</a> Pi will reboot automatically, when the driver download finished. After the module rebooted, waiting more than 30 seconds, there will be information display on the HDMI screen. And then, you will enter into system interface.
Descriptions: Under the HDMI display mode, you should use an external keyboard or SSH method for command inputting, since the <a href="http://ift.tt/1VLP1aQ" itemprop="url" target="_bank" title="virtual keyboard">virtual keyboard</a> is not available. Or you can set a serial port as a debugging interface for command inputting.
<h2>Touch screen calibration</h2>
Enter the following commands for touch screen calibration:

su pi
DISPLAY=:0.0 xinput_calibrator
</pre>
After running these commands, there will be a prompt for four-point calibration shown in the LCD screen. Click the points one by one to finish the touch calibration. Then, the new calibration data will be displayed in the terminal, as shows below. Please get these data for future use.

Enter the following command to edit 99-calibration.conf:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf

Then, the old calibration data will be displayed in the terminal:

Notices: In case of inaccurate touch, please perform screen calibration again and reboot the system.
<h2>How to work with a camera</h2>
RPi LCD can also work with an external camera to take photos. In this operation, a Raspberry Pi camera is required, which should be purchased separately. To work with a camera, you should enter the terminal, and input:

cd /home/pi/camera/
Camera
</pre>
Then, waiting several seconds, the camera application will be started automatically. Now, you can capture pictures by double clicking the screen.

<h3>Default entering the console after power up</h3>
You can perform more operations to Raspberry Pi module by entering the console of the Raspbain.
Edit the file rc.local. you should enter the terminal, and input:

sudo nano /etc/rc.local
</pre>
(Eidt the file rc.local)
Find out the following line:
<pre>
su –l pi –c "startx-- -dpi 60"
</pre>
Add the symbol “#”before this line, as follows:
<pre>
#su –l pi –c "startx-- -dpi 60"
</pre>
Press the keys Ctrl+X, and select the option Y to save the modification.
Reboot the system:

sudo reboot
</pre>
After the system rebooted, you will enter the console automatically.
<h3>Modifying the font size</h3>
Following the steps listed below, you can modify the font size
Edit the file rc.local. You should enter the terminal and input:
<pre>
sudo nano /etc/rc.local
</pre>
(Edit the file rc.local)
Find out the following line:
<pre>
su –l pi –c "startx-- -dpi 60"
</pre>
Modify the figure following the “dpi”. It is suggested to modify to “60”. Press the keys Ctrl+X and select the option Y to save the modification.
Reboot the system:

sudo reboot
</pre>
The modification will be valid after the system rebooted.
